How to set up a post-purchase upsell

Step-by-step guide to creating a post-purchase upsell page with Planet.

Updated today

With Planet, you can suggest additional products even after the customer has completed their purchase through a post-purchase upsell. It is an excellent way to increase sales through post-checkout purchases at a high-conversion moment.

In this step-by-step guide, you’ll learn how to create and configure a post-purchase upsell in your store in just a few minutes using Planet.

The first step to creating an upsell is to add a new extension. To do this, go to the Checkout page in Planet and click the “Add extension” button.

A pop-up will appear showing the available extensions for each page. In this case, to create a post-purchase upsell, select the Post-purchase page and choose the “Upsell” template.

Configuring the Upsell extension

Once the extension is created, you’ll need to configure its different sections:

1. Advanced conditions

Conditions allow you to precisely segment who will see the upsell:

  • Products: Limit the upsell visibility to orders that include specific products.

  • Market: Apply it only in certain countries or regions.

  • Cart amount spent: The upsell will only appear if the customer has spent a minimum (or maximum) amount.

  • Number of products in the cart: Show the upsell if the total quantity of items in the order exceeds (or does not exceed) a threshold.

  • Number of customer orders: Segment between new and returning customers.

2. Recommendations

Define which products will be displayed as the upsell:

  • Related products, based on the completed order.

  • Complementary products, based on the completed order.

  • Manual selection, if you prefer to control exactly what is suggested.

  • Product metafield, where products are recommended according to the configured product metafield value.

💡 If you choose Complementary products or Related products, you must have the free Shopify Search & Discovery app installed and properly configured.

3. Discount

Optionally, you can add a discount to the recommended product:

  • Discount type: No discount, percentage, or fixed amount.

  • Discount value: Define the value to apply.

  • Discount label: Visible text for the customer (e.g., “Special offer”).

  • Currency conversion: When selling in markets that operate in currencies different from the store currency (for example, EUR), Planet automatically applies a currency conversion based on Shopify’s exchange rates. This ensures that the discount is correctly adjusted to the customer’s local currency.

    • If enabled, the discount or fixed price is automatically converted to the market currency.

    • If disabled, the discount or fixed price will be applied directly without conversion, which may result in small differences in the perceived amount.

Example: If you set a fixed discount of €10, a customer purchasing in USD will receive a fixed discount of $10.

4. Configuration
