A product discount allows you to offer a special price on a specific product without changing its base price in Shopify.
The key advantage of this type of promotion is that it lets you personalize the price based on advanced conditions, such as the customer’s country, login status, order history, or whether they have a specific tag like “VIP.”
⚠️ Unlike the Price Discount preset, this method does allow advanced segmentation and does not involve modifying the product’s original price.
This step-by-step guide will show you how to create a product discount in just a few minutes using Planet.
Start by going to the promotions page and clicking the “add promotion” button.
A pop-up will appear with the available templates. To create a product discount, choose the “Volume Discount” template. In this template, you can configure a basic discount like “buy 1 or more and get a discount.”
1. Product discount configuration
In any template, the first step is to select the product(s) included in the promotion.
2. Actions
In this case, the only required action is configuring the discount.
Product Combination: Since this promotion applies to a single unit, you don’t need to configure product combinations.
Discount Options: You can set up:
Discount to apply: Choose between a percentage, fixed amount, or a specific unit price.
Types of discount:
Percentage Discount: Most common.
Example: 10% off the product.
Fixed Amount Discount: Deducts a set amount.
Example: €5 off the original price.
Fixed Price per Unit: Sets a specific price per unit regardless of the base price.
Example: €15 per unit no matter the original price.
Method: Choose between automatic discount or discount code.
Label in Cart and Checkout: This is the name of the discount that appears in the cart.
Other Discount Combinations: Choose whether this discount can be combined with other product or shipping discounts.
Currency Conversion: When selling in markets using currencies other than your store’s (e.g., EUR), Planet applies automatic conversion based on Shopify’s exchange rates:
If enabled: the discount or fixed price is automatically converted to the customer’s local currency.
If disabled: the discount or fixed price is applied without conversion, which may cause minor perceived differences.
Example: A fixed €10 discount will show as $10 for a customer paying in USD.
3. Widgets
3.1. Product page banner
You can add a banner on the product page to inform customers about the promotion. You can include the discount code name in the banner.
Both the text and appearance of the banner are fully customizable for each promotion.
4. Schedule the Promotion
By default, the promotion starts on the creation date. You can edit the start date and optionally set an end date or other scheduling periods.
5. Advanced Options
Advanced options let you define precisely who sees the promotion.
Market: Choose the countries or regions where the promotion applies.
Customer Tags: Choose required or excluded tags (e.g., only for VIPs).
Customer Login Status: Apply the promotion based on whether the customer is logged in.
Total Orders by Customer: Set the required number of past orders for eligibility.
Total Spent by Customer: Set a total spend threshold for eligibility.
Subscription Product: Choose whether the promotion applies to subscription products or not.
